چکیده

The X-ray holes at the centre of the Perseus Cluster of galaxies are not all at the same position angle with respect to the centre of the cluster. This configuration would result if the jet inflating the bubbles is precessing, or moving around, and the bubbles detach at different times. The orientations which best fit the observed travel directions are an inclination of the precession axis to the line of sight of 120 • and an opening angle of 50 •. From the timescales for the bubbles seen in the cluster, the precession timescale, τ prec , is around 3.3 × 10 7 yr. The bubbles rising up through different parts of the cluster may have interacted with the central cool gas, forming the whorl of cool gas observed in the temperature structure of the cluster. The dynamics of bubbles rising in fluids is discussed. The conditions present in the cluster are such that oscillatory motion, observed for bubbles rising in fluids on Earth, should take place. However the timescale for this motion is longer than that taken for the bubbles to evolve into spherical cap bubbles, which do not undergo a path instability, so such motion is not expected to occur.

The nature of the molecular gas system in the core of NGC 1275

We present near-infrared integral field spectroscopy of the central kiloparsec of NGC 1275 at the heart of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, obtained with the UIST IFU on UKIRT. The nuclear ro-vibrational H 2 emission is spatially resolved and is likely to originate approximately 50 pc from the active nucleus. The Paα emission is, by contrast, spatially unresolved. The requirements for thermal e...

Probing the Parsec-scale Accretion Flow of 3c 84 with Millimeter Wavelength Polarimetry

We report the discovery of Faraday rotation toward radio source 3C 84, the active galactic nucleus in NGC 1275 at the core of the Perseus Cluster. The rotation measure (RM), determined from polarization observations at wavelengths of 1.3 and 0.9 mm, is (8.7 ± 2.3)×105 rad m−2, among the largest ever measured. The RM remained relatively constant over a 2 yr period even as the intrinsic polarizat...

A Nuclear Disk and massive BH in NGC 4342

We discuss photometric and spectroscopic data of the E/S0 galaxy NGC 4342, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This galaxy harbors, in addition to its outer disk, a very small, stellar disk in its nucleus. Jeans-modeling suggests the presence of a 3-6×10 8 M ⊙ black hole (BH) in the nucleus. This galaxy therefore deviates significantly from the correlation between BH mass and bulge ...

Detection of a Super Star Cluster as the Ionizing Source in the Low Luminosity Agn

Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ultraviolet STIS imaging and spectroscopy of the low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) NGC 4303 have identified the previously detected UV-bright nucleus of this galaxy, as a compact, massive and luminous stellar cluster. The cluster with a size (FWHM) of 3.1 pc, and an ultraviolet luminosity log L 1500Å (erg s Å)= 38.33 is identified as a nuclear super star cluster (SSC) like...

Probing the Active Massive Black Hole Candidate in the Center of Ngc 404 with Vlbi

Recently Nyland et al. (2012) argued that the radio emission observed in the center of the dwarf galaxy NGC 404 originates in a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (LLAGN) powered by a massive black hole (MBH, M . 10 M⊙). High-resolution radio detections of MBHs are rare. Here we present sensitive, contemporaneous Chandra X-ray, and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio observations...
